Alcon Aggies Announce
2004 Scholarship Recipients
The Alcon Aggies announced their 2004 Scholarship Recipients and honored the recipients at a Scholarship Recognition Dinner on August 16th. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Dr. Richard DeMoye Poe Academic Scholarship. The scholarship was established in 1994 by the Alcon Aggies to honor Dr. Richard Poe ‘64 at his retirement from Alcon after 35 years of service. Since 1994, the Alcon Aggies have awarded $22,000 in scholarship monies to relatives of Alcon employees attending Texas A&M.
At the Scholarship Dinner (with over 40 attendees) the Alcon Aggies awarded three $1,200.00 scholarships. Pictured from left to right: Jessica Rodriquez, Richard Poe, Hoyt McMillan and Justin Porter. The 2004 recipients are:
Hoyt McMillan is the son of Sheila McMillan. Hoyt will enter his senior year at A&M in the Fall of 2004 and is majoring in Electrical Engineering. Hoyt graduated from Western Hills High School in May 1999. While at Texas A&M, Hoyt has maintained a 3.289 cumulative GPA. Hoyt is a member of the Eta Kappa Nu Electrical Engineering Honor Society and the Phi Kappa Phi Senior Interdisciplinary Honor Society. Hoyt has received the Undergraduate Research Awards Program Scholarship and the Kennedy Electrical Engineering Scholarship. Hoyt has worked with his church's ministry programs and has worked as a lab assistant and peer teacher in A&M's Electrical Engineering department.
Jessica Rodriquez is the daughter of Lee and Ramona Rodriquez. Jessica will enter her junior year at Texas A&M in the Fall of 2004 and is majoring in Biomedical Sciences. Jessica graduated from Crowley High School in May 2002. While at Texas A&M, Jessica has maintained a 4.0 cumulative GPA. Jessica has been awarded the National Society of Collegiate Scholars Award, is on the National Dean's List, and was the 2003 and 2004 Texas A&M Multicultural Services Distinguished Student. Jessica also volunteers her time to work with/tutor disadvantaged elementary students.
Justin Porter is the son of Sharon Miosi. Justin will enter his freshman year at Texas A&M in the Fall of 2004 and plans to majoring in Computer Engineering with an electrical track. Justin graduated from Crowley High School in May 2004 with a 3.92 cumulative GPA. In high school, Justin was a member of the National Honor Society for 2 year, and played football for 4 years. Justin was also a member of the Drama Club, the Chess Club and the Power Lifting team. Justin plans to be a member of the Corps of Cadets.
Hoyt, Jessica and Justin will each receive a $1,200 scholarship for use toward their academic endeavors at Texas A&M. These scholarship monies are derived solely from contributions by the Alcon Aggies and a donation from the Alcon Foundation.
The Alcon Aggies are a Special Interest Group (SIG) of the Fort Worth/Tarrant County A&M Club. Eligible applicants of the Alcon Aggies scholarship are relatives* of an Alcon employee, accepted by and/or attending Texas A&M University (College Station campus) as an undergraduate student. *Relatives include: children, parents, grandparents, grandchildren, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Alcon Aggies scholarship applications are available each year in the Spring.
